The Kaloo Community Development and Water Project is a development cooperation between INUG Stockholm and Kaloo Self Help Group in the Buoye sub-location, Kenya.

The project goals are

  1. To achieve safe drinking water and sanitation at all schools in the sublocation
    with K’aloo gaining the capacity to construct and maintain water
    supply and sanitation systems;
  2. Continued capacity and institutional building of partner organisation K’aloo
    to be able to effectively administer and manage activities for local community
    development; and
  3. To outline an integrated community development and action plan for Buoye
    sub-location, whereby the capacity and framework is created for the
    community to align priorities, coordinate development, secure financing, and
    initiate their own activities.

    INUG Stockholm’s approach has been to address the most urgent needs of safe drinking water and sanitation, utilizing the engagement at schools to better understand the community’s needs and through the process of formulating a development strategy, facilitate linkages with regionally available knowledge and resources. The beneficiaries for the entire 3 phases of project are a total of six schools
    plus Orongo Orphanage. Since the start in 2007, 7 institutional size rainwater harvesting tanks have been built at each Nyaimbo Primary, Orongo Secondary, Orongo Orphanage, Buoye Primary and Orongo Primary School. In parallel, while the organisational and maintenance activities are taking
    place, we have been conducting trainings in safe water handling, hygiene, and
    sanitation education.
